The Wild Ones Greater Baton Rouge chapter hosted a dozen eager members for a seed cleaning social to process seeds for the chapter’s seed library and seed packets, the East Baton Rouge Public Library seed libraries, and for the upcoming seed swap on October 19th.
Our members learned different techniques for releasing seeds from the seed heads and what was chaff vs. seed for a variety of species of native plants. Several innovative techniques for sifting, smashing, static cling, and easy cleaning up were employed! Members were able to bring the seed heads they collected, or they could help process seed heads donated to Wild Ones. The event was a great way to socialize while also working with your hands.
Members amusingly learned firsthand how Texas Star Hibiscus (Hibiscus coccineus) seeds shoot everywhere, and how Joe Pye Weed (Eutrochium dubium) seeds look very similar to the chaff. Many thanks to our Seed Collection Co-Chairs, Kate Weinell and Katrina Hashagen, and Vice President Allison Gianelloni for arranging the event.
